Templeton Foundation Press Offers Subsidies to Other Publishers
to Support Growth of Science-Religion Field

November 2006/West Conshohocken, PA—Templeton Foundation Press announces the launch of the Templeton Publishing Subsidy Program, which offers publishers the opportunity to apply for grants from $5,000 - $15,000 to assist with the publication of books that contribute to the science-religion dialogue. The program is funded by the John Templeton Foundation in accordance with its mission to further the spread of spiritual information worldwide.

“Publishers often hesitate to publish an excellent manuscript because of financial projections that indicate a likely loss of revenue,” notes Joanna Hill, executive director and publisher of Templeton Foundation Press. “This program provides subsidies to make the publication and marketing of these books feasible.”

Applications may be made for:

• A financial assistance subsidy: publishers request a grant that will be applied to the actual publication costs of a book that might otherwise be unprofitable; or a grant that enhances the value of a publication, like a DVD or a color-plate section, or supplemental marketing, such as an author tour
• A translation subsidy: publishers apply for a grant that underwrites all or part of the translation costs

The Templeton Publishing Subsidy Program operates electronically. A publisher may submit a request for a Publishing Grant and/or a Translation Grant online through the Web site: www.templetonpublishingsubsidy.org

The Templeton Publishing Subsidy Program was created in response to a vision of Sir John Templeton. The founder of the John Templeton Foundation and Templeton Foundation Press, who is now close to 94 years old, said a year ago that he would like to support publishing projects that make the growing scholarship and research in the science-religion field available to the next generation. While Templeton Foundation Press is, of course, a key publisher in this field, Sir John wanted to encourage other publishers to expand their lists to include more books on the science-religion dialogue—and he delighted in the concept of a publishing company helping other publishing companies make books financially feasible.

Templeton Foundation Press took up the challenge, designed a program that was granted funding by the John Templeton Foundation, implemented the program, and now manages the program.
